“Health is the ability to adapt”?..
In 1948 WHO defined health as ” a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”. Isn’t it a very high bar and also an unrealistic one?
In reality, for understanding health and wellbeing – a part of it is to understand what health means to you?How do you want to use your energy? What do you want to get out of your health? Having spent so many years to fine tune what health (physical and mental) means to me and taking into account this personalisation , I find the following description of health by Machteld Huber the most accurate – “the ability to adapt and self – manage in the face of social, physical and emotional challenges”. In short the ability to adapt to adversity.
Today, even more so we are constantly bombarded with adversities and challenges and how many of us are able to bounce back and thrive?
We are taking lesser time to be with ourselves and fill our cup and giving more energy out while totally discharging our own batteries. But all of this can be achieved easily and effortlessly with small changes and habits that we can incorporate slowly. We all have the resilience and ability to build up our energy, strength and capacity back up again.
Health is to be built everyday. The choices with food, sleep, exercise , people we surround ourselves with, is what accumulates and adds to overall health and vitality. To look at the bigger picture which goes beyond just the food we eat and counting calories is the “real deal”.
Yes, it is just that one little choice we exercise that adds to our overall health and helps us bounce back in the face of whatever is thrown at us!..
I would love to hear from you, how do you define your health?
